Rebecca's story:
History graduate turned documentarian, currently seeking entry-level opportunities!

I am from a small village in the Central Belt, based primarily in Glasgow but with easy access to Edinburgh and much of Central Scotland.  I attended school in Airdrie and Coatbridge before going to university to study History.

I graduated with a 1st class MA (Hons) in History from the University of St Andrews this year, specialising in social history and popular culture with a particular focus on accessibility of knowledge and historical storytelling. Through my studies I developed my passion for human stories, and a desire to make them accessible to larger audiences.  This prompted my decision to pursue a career in documentary TV and film-making.

I was fortunate to be able to make a short documentary film as part of my degree, and I recently produced, filmed and edited a 15-min film highlighting the work of the local NHS Research Nurse team during the COVID pandemic. Both experiences cemented my decision to pursue my career in this field.

After graduating, I was accepted into the 2021 cohort of the Grierson Trust DocLab program, designed to support individuals from under-represented groups pursuing a career in the industry.  The program consists of an intensive training week, several masterclasses with industry professionals, and ongoing career support. It is a fantastic experience and has given me a solid foundation upon which to build.

I am currently looking for early-level opportunities (e.g. runner/researcher positions) to build my experience and allow me contribute to exciting new projects.  I would also love to hear from other female filmmakers in Scotland to start building relationships in the industry and learn about their stories!
