Jessica's story

My name is Jessica. I am an autistic, disabled, working class and lgbt filmmaker, PhD historian of disability, writer and content creator of Scottish and Turkish background.

I am a video contributor to BBC The Social who help new talent get a foot in the industry by allowing us to make videos that reach people through their online platforms. My  documentary videos for them are on varied subjects, from disabled subcultures and bullying to film representation, history due to my PhD expertise in history and investigative pieces on autism ‘cures’. They are shared on BBC The Social’s online platforms. The role involves pitching to producers, acting as a researcher, writing scripts, sorting paperwork then filming and editing. My videos have achieved over 100k views and been featured on the BBC main page. My latest video on Sia’s Music from an autistic filmmaker POV has just went viral and sits at 1.5 million views on Facebook alone right now.

I offer my expertise and opinions freelance on tv and radio. I contributed to BBC Scotland's Loop as a guest contributor visiting Project Ability's disabled art exhibition in 2019 to analyse and comment on the pieces. In late 2020 I appeared on BBCR3's Free Thinking due to history expertise for an episode on disabled history and I will be on Disability Art Online’s podcast ‘Disability and…’ this May to talk about disability history too. BBC Scotland, Loop, Season 3, The Art of Activism, Project Ability Young Talent, September 11th, 2019: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07n0qxk

  • BBC Scotland, BBC The Social Presents…Disabled Stories, December 9th, 2020 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000q7l5

I am also a beginner filmmaker. My first short is Constant Companion, a surreal drama following Luce as she tries to overcome and beat the trauma and intrusive thoughts, or Companion as they call themselves, caused by an abusive ex years earlier. Can she recover and love again? You can read about it here. Trailer can be watched here and the film link is this: https://vimeo.com/476559379 (password: constantcompanionfilm).
