Rachel's story:
Outdoor and environmental documentary filmmaker

I am a multi-skilled shooting producer-director, based in Scotland, specialising in adventure sport and environmental stories. I have a love for tying together human stories with our landscapes and wildlife.

I thrive on narrative-lead documentary work, and commercial campaigns centred on stories with real meaning – focusing in on our connections with nature, landscapes and wildlife. I seek exploration and adventure, but I also look for purpose and creating things that drive others to act positively, whether for the environment, for others, or for themselves.

You’ll find me tracking wildlife in the Scottish hills, abseiling and shooting from a rock face in wintry mountains, or in the open sea, immersed in the water, camera in hand. By exploring the connections our individual and collective health has to the environment and to wildlife, and the way our outdoor spaces are changing.

One of the things I love about filmmaking is how multifaceted it can be, and I truly enjoy experimenting with different styles and disciplines, equally happy in a wetsuit in the ocean as I am in a cosy synthetic down jacket in Scottish winter.

For release online in 2024: Entangled
Director/DOP/Editor

Entangled is a short film that focuses on the bond between two Scottish winter climbers as they explore fickle conditions and joyful movement and connection through Scottish winter climbing. The film leads the viewer back and forth between the climbing and belaying, inching upwards, focusing just as much on the movement of the ropes, the placing of the screws, the concentration on our climber’s faces, as much as it does on the climbing itself.

2023: Thrawn
Cinematographer

In the Scottish Highlands, the word “thrawn” means “stubborn,” but in a good way. It’s a virtuous struggle to make the most of what’s available. Professional snowboarder Lesley McKenna was raised on thrawn, and she has spent her life pushing the boundaries of her sport while advocating for the people and the place that shaped her.

2022: The Ice Mile
Director/DOP/Editor

The Ice Mile is an award winning film showing both the beauty and adventure in outdoor swimming – chasing those lower temperatures in the cooling winter, community, pushing distance and the body to its limit. The film documents cold water swimmer Becca Harvey over the course of a year, following her journey and her training, documenting what it takes to consider an Ice Mile. It takes us through the beauty and the harshness of UK landscapes through the exploration of bodies of water, celebrating our natural spaces – from mountain tarns to the ocean that surrounds us.

A Land for Everyone is a project and short film following skateboard and adventure photographer Hannah Bailey, and skateboarder, Lyndsay McLaren as they explore the Highlands of Scotland. 2022:
The Last Forgotten Art
DOP
In ‘The Last Forgotten Art’, the film places emphasis on a different style of climbing that requires a certain amount of creativity to climb them, focusing on the fringes of the climbing community drawn to all things wide at its heart. From hand sized splitters, chicken wings to wedged knees, and whole-body wriggles, the film followscrack afonciados Mel, Vicky and Steve in their pursuit of climbing slightly more unusual, so called ‘off-width climbs’ found at Ramshaw Rocks in the Peak District.

This warm and engaging film gives an insight into Andrew’s life as a thalidomider and his experiences both off and on the bike.
