Parisa's story

Parisa Urquhart is a Scottish Iranian documentary director and producer based in Scotland.

She makes content that has a particular focus on identity and colonisation. The stories emerge from Scotland but resonate globally and span current affairs films for Channel 4 News, documentaries for BBC television and cinematic shorts. In 2021 she won a BAFTA award in the ‘Single Documentary’ category for ‘Scotland, Slavery & Statues’ - a highly acclaimed 60' film that attracted nationwide press and is now being distributed worldwide. In 2020 she won a Scottish Documentary Institute competition to direct a 30’ documentary ‘Long Live Livi’ for BBC about ‘The Snagglerats’, 7 year old girl skaters, who attempt to save legendary Livingston Skatepark with encouragement from Tony Hawk. This documentary won the ‘Best Action Sport Film’ at Kendal Film Festival 2022 and is distributed on Amazon Prime and Garage Films worldwide. In 2019 Parisa produced and directed a 15’ cinematic short ‘Strike For Freedom: Frederick Douglass in Scotland’ has toured throughout Scotland, screened in cinemas alongside US drama ‘Harriet’ and is screening at film festivals and colleges in the US. She has also produced three short films for Channel 4 News, two of which she also directed and were though the Channel 4 News Film Fund. Parisa is now working on a feature documentary about the Iranian Revolution. Parisa has also been a BAFTA Scotland juror in 2021 and 2022.

Parisa has always had a passion for film and documentaries. This passion persisted during her previous careers in sports journalism and the property industry. She eventually undertook filmmaking courses when living in Sydney, Australia. Following this, she worked on documentaries by Sydney media companies who had international clients such as the World Wildlife Fund. On her return to Scotland Parisa established Urquhart Media Limited, enabling her to produce and direct her own content.
